Design Maturity Assessment - enhancing quality at the GLA

GLA

What we did

The GLA Group (consisting of LLDC, OPDC, GLA Land and Development and Places for London) has completed c. 20,000 homes and is developing a further 100,000 homes across the capital over the coming years. The Group wanted to understand the ‘design maturity’ of its four developing organisations, and to learn how to enhance their culture and processes if required to achieve better quality housing. We undertook the following work, structured around the Delivering Quality Homes Handbook themes:

  • Visits to and ‘design review’ of existing completed housing

  • Conversations with staff members about quality-based processes

  • Analysis of all documents used to seek quality

  • Half day workshops with the development, design and planning teams from each organisation

  • Final report summarising all of the above, proposing both Group-wide and organisation-specific actions

We gave Claire a complex brief and she worked well with a wide variety of GLA stakeholders, engaging everyone in a journey towards better quality homes. Her report was pragmatic, thoughtful and challenging, giving us clear advice which we can now action
