Briefs and standards

We help public sector clients to set clear and compelling standards for their housing development programmes as well as writing project briefs for complex major projects.

A good project brief which includes a clear and aspirational set of quality standards is essential for any housing delivery project. A good brief allows design teams and contractors or developers to respond with creativity, innovation and efficiency and should go beyond planning and building regulations. It should describe with clarity to the design team what the delivery organisation and their residents will expect, both during the development process and as the built outcome.

Design Standards Review

Who is this for?

You are a public sector landowner leading a programme of new build homes and/or mixed use developments. You are keen to enhance the quality of your output, and need some external advice on whether your design standards and Employer’s Requirements are adequate. You may wish to commission revised standards/ERs.

What’s included?

  • We work alongside your commercial advisors, and you, the landowner

  • We listen to your aspirations about the quality of housing output which you wish to achieve

  • We briefly review the quality of your recent built output

  • We review your current vision document, project briefs, overall ‘design brief’ and/or Employer’s Requirements

  • We propose where each of these documents could be strengthened

  • If desired, we then work with our technical collaborators to enhance your documents to achieve the quality standards you are seeking

Brief-Writing

Who is this for?

You are a public sector landowner leading a complex housing or mixed use regeneration or development scheme. You wish to create a development brief (either for a design team or a developer) which sets out the project aspirations from the high level vision down to the detail of the new homes.

What’s included?

  • We work alongside your commercial and technical advisors, and you, the landowner

  • We listen to your aspirations about what you want and need to achieve with the project in both qualitative and commercial terms

  • We listen to your key stakeholders in the same way

  • We undertake research into the background and history of the site (and residents) from all angles including technical, planning, social, market

  • We work with viability consultants to understand the cost and value dynamics of the scheme and the likely density requirement

  • We pull all of this research together into a comprehensive project brief which can be used by a design team or developer (as appropriate) as the baseline brief for the scheme
